NASA has announced plans to conduct an unpiloted test flight of Boeing's Starliner spacecraft, marking the agency's next step following the complications that occurred during the vehicle's first crewed mission in 2024.12 The unpiloted Starliner-1 mission is scheduled to launch as early as December of this year or January of next year.3 This recovery effort reflects NASA's continued commitment to the Starliner program despite recent setbacks, with Boeing affirming its role as a provider of crew transportation services for American astronauts.1
The decision to pursue an unpiloted test before resuming crewed operations comes after the initial Starliner crewed flight encountered significant technical challenges. During that 2024 mission, thruster malfunctions and helium leaks forced the spacecraft to return uncrewed to Earth, leaving two astronauts stranded at the International Space Station.3 These crew members were classified as Class A accident-affected personnel and ultimately returned to Earth in March 2025 aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule instead.3 Following an investigation completed in February, NASA identified 61 recommendations for improvement, and Boeing has undertaken modifications to the service module in response.3
Looking ahead, NASA has set 2028 as the target year for the next crewed Starliner mission, designated Starliner-2.23 Additionally, the agency indicated that the spacecraft may require a new rocket for future operations.2
