Iwaya Takeshi acknowledged that "the current state of Japan-China relations is worrying,"1 and indicated that the National Diet Members' League for Promoting Japan-China Friendship will work to bring bilateral relations "back to their original purpose."1 This meeting marks the first formal diplomatic discussion between Wang Yi and Japanese political figures following Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae's November 2025 remarks about "Taiwan contingency."1 The two nations will commemorate the 55th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations next year.1
