A major retrospective exhibition of works by He E, China's first-generation female sculptor, opened at the Shenzhen Museum of Art on September 23, presenting 253 sculptures, sketches, and archival documents spanning seven decades of artistic practice 1. The 90-year-old artist's comprehensive career journey—from Dunhuang cave temples to the Yellow River's banks and finally to Shenzhen—challenges the public's narrow perception of her legacy as limited to a single masterpiece 1.
The exhibition, organized into four sections titled "Beginning, Continuation, Transformation, and Resolution," traces He E's artistic trajectory from her early studies copying Dunhuang frescoes to her contemporary innovations 1. He E spent twelve years stationed in Dunhuang starting in 1962, an intensive period that proved formative to her practice 1. Her iconic sculpture "Mother of the Yellow River," created in the 1980s, remains among her most recognized works 1. Beyond her sculptures, He E self-published a monograph titled "Contemporary Chinese Female Sculptors," compiling works by over one hundred women artists in the field 1.
He E has credited Shenzhen with transforming her worldview, describing it as "a blessed land that changed my perspective" more than four decades ago when she first witnessed the city's rapid modernization, including the sight of minibuses that could stop anywhere 1. Reflecting on her journey, she stated: "At age fifteen, I joined the revolution, planting a seed of art for the people. Then in Dunhuang for twelve years...this seed nurtured in its mother's womb bore fruit through reform and opening-up" 1. She has characterized her artistic practice as fundamental to her identity, saying "Sculpture is my lifeblood, it is my essence" 1. The retrospective concludes on December 10 1.
