Scholar Claudia Murphy has uncovered evidence that male secretaries, including chief secretary Francis Walsingham, carefully edited and intensified the emotional tone of Queen Elizabeth I's correspondence.1 Through analysis of over 500 letters from the Tudor monarch, Murphy's research demonstrates that these secretaries were not merely transcribing the queen's words but actively shaping their impact.1
Most notably, Walsingham modified a May 1584 letter to the Earl of Shrewsbury, George Talbot, regarding Mary Queen of Scots, strengthening rather than moderating its criticism of Mary and her son James VI.1 A famous February 10, 1586 letter to Robert Dudley survives only in secretary Francis Miles's handwriting.1 According to Murphy's findings, Walsingham employed strategic emotional framing in his revisions: he portrayed an angry Elizabeth to convince Mary that refusing cooperation with the English government was futile, while simultaneously constructing a nostalgic Elizabeth to suggest the Scottish queen could still win back her royal favor.1 Mary Stuart had fled to England in 1567 and remained imprisoned for 19 years before her execution for treason in 1587.1
