In 2011, the author and Willa Ross in Vancouver undertook the ambitious task of reconstructing the original cut of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" by integrating multiple unauthorized download versions.1 Their effort was motivated by concerns over MGM's early 2000s restoration, which had extended the English-language version's runtime from 161 minutes to 179 minutes.1
The project gained momentum when the author resumed collaboration with Ross in July 2019, leveraging higher-quality sources including Blu-ray editions and LaserDisc audio tracks.1 This unofficial preservation work drew inspiration from other notable fan-restoration initiatives, such as Petr Harmáček's "Despecialized" version and Team Negative1's "Project 4K77," the latter containing dozens of audio tracks and exceeding 100 gigabytes in file size—a scope commercial Blu-ray releases cannot accommodate.1 However, such restoration efforts exist in legal gray areas; under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act Section 1201, circumventing Blu-ray digital locks constitutes federal violation regardless of intent.1
The unofficial work ultimately proved valuable to the industry. In May 2024, the author formally became an advisor to Arrow Films for the forthcoming release of the "Dollars Trilogy".1 Arrow Films ultimately adopted LaserDisc audio tracks as the primary audio source for the official version,1 demonstrating how grassroots preservation efforts can inform and enhance legitimate commercial restoration projects.
