Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh has been awarded the 2026 Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize by the Council of Europe on September 28, 2026.1 The recognition honors her decades of advocacy for women's rights, the rights of political prisoners, and the abolition of capital punishment in Iran, pursued despite repeated arrests and imprisonment.1
Sotoudeh's commitment to human rights has come at considerable personal cost. In 2019, she was sentenced to 33 years in prison and 148 lashes.1 Her activism intensified during Iran's "Woman, Life, Freedom" protest movement in 2022, during which she emerged as a prominent voice.1 More recently, she was arrested again in April 2026 and released on bail in May.1 Her dedication to the cause has previously been recognized with the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize in 2012 and the Right Livelihood Award in 2020.1 She also conducted a hunger strike in Evin Prison in 2020 as a form of protest.1 The Vaclav Havel award carries a monetary prize of €60,000.1
