Australia has granted Japan's Self-Defense Forces permission to conduct hypersonic missile tests at the Woomera Range, a facility spanning approximately 120,000 square kilometers and recognized as one of the world's largest fully enclosed land-based weapons testing grounds.1
Japan plans to test two advanced weapons systems at the facility: the Hyper Velocity Gliding Projectile (HVGP), which travels at speeds exceeding Mach 5, and the Hypersonic Cruise Missile (HCM), which achieves velocities surpassing Mach 6.1 This initiative reflects the deepening military partnership between the two countries. Japan's Self-Defense Forces previously conducted live-fire exercises with the Type 12 anti-ship missile at the Bicroft Range in eastern Australia in 2023, followed by a test launch of the Type 03 medium-range air defense missile off Australia's eastern coast in July 2025.1
The bilateral defense cooperation extends beyond missile testing. In April 2026, the two nations signed a military sales agreement valued at 6.5 billion U.S. dollars, under which Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will construct three Mogami-class guided-missile frigates for Australia—representing Japan's largest post-World War II military export order.1 Japan and Australia have also jointly developed and successfully tested high-energy laser equipment at the range, while Mitsubishi Electric has invested approximately 50 million U.S. dollars to establish a "defense industrial base" in Australia.1 The countries are additionally collaborating on unmanned attack submarines, large stealth unmanned aircraft, and new air defense and anti-missile systems.1
