Microsoft has officially ceased using the Copilot+ brand designation on its latest laptop computers, despite the devices meeting all the technical specifications previously required for that classification.1 Brett Ostrum, a Microsoft Surface executive, confirmed at Snapdragon Summit 2026 that while the new devices satisfy every requirement of the earlier Copilot+ PC standard, they will no longer carry the Copilot+ label.1 "These are not called Copilot+ PCs," Ostrum stated, "but they do meet all the requirements of our previous bar for what Copilot+ devices are."1
The shift represents a reversal from Microsoft's 2024 launch of the Copilot+ initiative, which mandated devices feature a neural processing unit (NPU) with performance of 40+ TOPS.1 The company is simultaneously scaling back Copilot's integration within Windows 11 and has removed its previous recommendation for 32GB of RAM from its website, instead releasing a Surface for Business notebook that runs on 8GB of RAM.1 Other devices such as Nvidia RTX Spark N1X and Microsoft Project Zenith are also launching without the Copilot+ designation.1
