At a chronic disease prevention conference held in Nanjing on September 18, 2026, researchers presented compelling evidence on the relationship between lifestyle and longevity in China. According to findings from the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) prospective study presented by Li Liming, professor at the School of Public Health at Peking University, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can significantly extend life expectancy.1 Men who adopt healthy lifestyle practices can expect to live 8.8 additional years at age 30 compared to those with the most unhealthy lifestyles, while women can gain 8.1 years.1
The research, which encompasses approximately 510,000 adults in a large-scale prospective cohort study, has accumulated follow-up data exceeding 9.03 million person-years as of the end of 2025.1 The findings underscore the critical importance of lifestyle interventions in disease prevention. In 2024, chronic diseases accounted for 87.5% of all resident deaths in China, establishing them as the leading cause of mortality among the Chinese population.1
