Scientists at Stellenbosch University have identified previously unknown chemical compounds in cannabis leaves using advanced analytical techniques.1 Researchers detected 79 phenolic compounds in three commercial cannabis varieties cultivated in South Africa, of which 25 had never been reported in cannabis before.1 Additionally, 16 compounds were preliminarily identified as flavonoid alkaloids, marking the first evidence of these substances in cannabis leaves.1
The findings suggest that cannabis leaves, typically discarded as waste material, may contain a rich reservoir of biomedically significant compounds.1 The research employed two-dimensional liquid chromatography combined with high-resolution mass spectrometry to conduct the analysis.1 Cannabis is already known to contain over 750 metabolites.1 The study has been published in the Journal of Chromatography A under DOI: 10.1016/j.chroma.2025.466023.1
