Schools in Novosibirsk, Russia have introduced patriotic education materials since 2022 that explicitly prepare students to die for their country.12 The curriculum contains textbooks claiming that "love always involves sacrifice" and that "the sacrifice of those who defend the nation is their life."12 The materials also demonize the West by describing Europeans as "thieves, murderers, and liars," equate homosexuality with pedophilia, and compare Disney cartoons to pornography.12
The propaganda extends beyond classroom content.2 Schools have invited military personnel who participated in the Ukraine war to address students, and administrators have threatened students with reporting to federal security services for wearing clothing with English-language slogans.12 According to educator Dima Tzisel, many students are inclined to embrace pro-Putin viewpoints without critical thought.2
However, not all students accept the indoctrination. Two interviewed 16-year-olds, Ilya and Aleksei, expressed opposition to the war and stated their intention to leave Russia after graduation.12 After YouTube and Discord were blocked by authorities, both students began using VPNs to access independent media and opposition voices, prompting them to question government narratives.12
