TikTok has agreed to pay Alabama at least $100 million and implement restrictions on teenage users as part of the first state-level settlement addressing social media addiction concerns.1 The deal requires the platform to impose a daily two-hour usage limit for minors, block access between midnight and 6 a.m., disable push notifications during school hours, and prohibit the use of beauty filters for teenage users.1 The nightly access window may be extended to 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. if other platforms adopt similar measures.1
The settlement could expand significantly if additional states follow suit.1 TikTok may ultimately pay up to $300 million if attorneys general from 40 states sign comparable agreements with the company.1 Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall stated: "Tonight, they can rest easier, knowing there are real protections in place for their children against the harms of social media addiction."1 Alabama filed the lawsuit against TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance in April 2025.1
This agreement mirrors recent enforcement actions against other major platforms.1 Meta agreed to pay $1.8 billion in August to settle similar litigation, while a New Mexico jury ordered Meta to pay $375 million in March and a Los Angeles jury awarded $6 million to a 20-year-old woman against Meta and YouTube that same month.1 More than a dozen states, including California and New York, continue pursuing lawsuits against TikTok.1
