Security researchers have uncovered a sophisticated scheme in which fraudulent advertisements placed through Google Ads are targeting users worldwide with fake technical support alerts. 1 Between August 31 and September 14, security firm Netskope observed users from 619 customer organizations clicking on these malicious ads, with 62 percent of affected organizations based in the United States, followed by Japan and Australia in second and third place. 1
The scam operates by freezing users' device screens and prompting them to call fraudulent support numbers, with victims subsequently pressured to pay excessive fees, grant remote access to their computers, or divulge personal information. 1 Netskope tracked at least 284 Google Ads campaign IDs distributed across more than 250 legitimate publisher websites, with the deceptive advertisements appearing on high-traffic sites including maps, weather, real estate, document hosting, and sports services. 1
