Researchers have developed an innovative contact lens capable of assessing stress by measuring serotonin, a neurotransmitter, in tears.1 The device incorporates a flexible hydrogel material that encases graphene and silver electrodes, enabling detection of serotonin at exceptionally low concentrations of 72 picomoles per liter—below the average serotonin level found in human tears at 15 nanomoles per liter.1 The technology has been validated through experiments involving human volunteers and animal models, positioning it as a promising non-invasive wearable platform for continuous monitoring of biochemical markers.1
The contact lens demonstrated remarkable durability, withstanding more than 28 days of repeated flipping, folding, stretching, and twisting.1 Testing with human volunteers revealed that serotonin levels declined following stressful activities such as public speaking and mathematical challenges.1 In animal trials, researchers conducted five-minute tests on the eyes of anesthetized pigs with no signs of infection or irritation observed.1 Yangzhi Zhu, a researcher involved in the project, noted that "tears could become a practical source of non-invasive biochemical information that can be repeatedly measured over time."1 The findings were published on September 16, 2023, in Science Translational Medicine.1
