Roland Garros Airport on the French island of Reunion opened a new arrivals terminal in 2024 featuring an innovative natural ventilation system that eliminates the need for traditional air conditioning.1 The facility uses a combination of specialized roof design, side ventilation openings, and large ceiling fans with a diameter of 7.5 meters to manage temperatures in the tropical humid climate.1
The engineering approach achieves a temperature reduction of 4-5 degrees Celsius indoors compared to outdoor conditions.1 During the summer humid season from November to April, the system lowers the perceived temperature from 30 degrees Celsius to 25-26 degrees Celsius by maintaining airflow of one meter per second.1 According to Éric Bussolino, "Our goal is to keep the indoor air temperature the same as the outdoor temperature, while generating one meter per second of air flow to reduce the perceived temperature for passengers."1
The project cost 75 million euros total, with 60 million euros allocated to the building itself and 15 million euros for the baggage sorting system.1 The design delivers substantial operational savings, reducing annual energy bills by 150,000 euros compared to conventionally air-conditioned buildings, cutting energy consumption by 60 percent and carbon emissions by a factor of eight.1 Marc Delanoë stated, "From the very beginning, we never considered air conditioning an option for this building."1
