德国学生罢课抗议征兵制改革

German students have launched strikes in multiple cities to oppose the government's potential reintroduction of mandatory military conscription.1 The protests come as Chancellor Merz has prioritized strengthening Germany's military capabilities amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict, having implemented a voluntary conscription law in January.1 Under this new framework, all 18-year-old German males are required to complete a questionnaire about their willingness to serve, while the same requirement is voluntary for females.1 Additionally, all 18-year-old males must undergo medical examinations to assess their fitness for military service.1

The student movement has grown significantly, with organizers planning over 100 protest events across Germany.1 A 16-year-old protester, Elias Bernhard, expressed the sentiment driving the demonstrations, stating: "Young people do not want to join the German Armed Forces, which is why I took to the streets today."1 The grievances center on both a lack of interest in military service among young Germans and opposition to the government's policy of requiring medical evaluations even for those who have indicated no interest in serving.1 According to official data, approximately 1,000 18-year-old males who expressed no interest in military service have already undergone medical examinations since July.1

The government aims to expand the armed forces from the current 186,700 personnel to 260,000 by the early 2030s and recruit approximately 200,000 additional reserve personnel.1 Merz has pledged to transform the German Armed Forces into Europe's strongest conventional military.1 The mandatory conscription system was previously ended by former Chancellor Merkel in 2011.1
