Deutsche Welle held a panel discussion in Berlin to demonstrate support for Georgia's democratic values amid escalating threats to journalists and cultural workers in the country.1 The event, hosted at the James-Simon-Galerie on September 25, 2026, addressed the mounting pressures facing independent media professionals and artists under Georgia's ruling Georgian Dream party.1
According to media expert Nino Robakidze, journalists in Georgia face a multifaceted assault on their work, including physical threats, digital attacks, psychological pressure, and economic and legal obstacles.1 This deterioration in press freedom has intensified particularly since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, when pressure on independent media and professional reporters significantly increased.1 The situation reflects a broader democratic decline in the country, which had previously been regarded as a beacon of democracy in the Caucasus region but has shifted toward authoritarianism under Georgian Dream's rule since 2012.1
Recent legislative measures have further constrained expression and cultural freedom. A controversial "foreign agents" law, set to take effect in June 2025, introduces criminal penalties and prison sentences of up to five years, representing a stricter version of earlier regulations.1 Additionally, Georgia's anti-LGBTQ legislation prohibits the promotion of same-sex relationships and non-binary gender identities in public spaces, media, education, and the arts.1 These restrictions coincide with broader political repression: between 90 and 100 political dissidents and protesters are currently imprisoned or detained awaiting trial.1 The government also suspended EU accession negotiations until 2028 following contested parliamentary elections in October 2024, which returned the Georgian Dream party with an expanded majority.1
In a show of commitment to Georgia's media landscape, Deutsche Welle launched a Georgian-language service, marking its 33rd language offering.1
