Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius underscored that air defense represents his nation's most pressing security priority in an exclusive interview with DW, declaring that "Lithuanian skies are NATO skies." 2 He emphasized that securing Lithuania's airspace is integral to NATO's broader defense, stating: "If Lithuanian skies are safe, then NATO's skies are to a large extent also protected." 2
Sinkevicius outlined multiple security challenges confronting Lithuania, including drone incursions, irregular migration, and weather balloon intrusions originating from Belarus. 2 He stressed that military spending alone proves insufficient for ensuring national security, and argued that NATO must strengthen its air defense capabilities. 2 On military procurement strategy, Sinkevicius rejected choosing between different defense technologies, asserting that "we need both drones and tanks," indicating that conventional equipment and emerging technologies serve complementary roles. 2
Regarding Ukraine support, the Lithuanian premier reaffirmed his country's commitment to allocating at least 0.25 percent of gross domestic product annually to assist Ukraine, with recent contributions reaching approximately 0.3 percent of GDP. 2 Sinkevicius recently visited Kyiv and Lutsk, located 400 kilometers west of Ukraine's capital, where he met with Ukrainian political leaders. 2
