Researchers from the University of British Columbia have identified two previously unknown sea spider species in the Salish Sea, marking the first discovery of new sea spiders in the region in nearly a century.1 The findings, based on fieldwork conducted between September 2023 and August 2024, reveal creatures with striking characteristics.
The first species, Callipallene pilosuspedes, features distinctively hairy legs and striking red eyes, with only a single specimen recovered during the survey.1 The second species, Tanystylum kiixin—named after an ancient Inuit village site—is frequently covered in tiny parasites.1 Both discoveries emerged from diving expeditions reaching depths of 18 meters across multiple locations including waters near Quadra Island, Vancouver, Bamfield, and Victoria.1
The research team believes the Salish Sea likely harbors additional undocumented sea spider species yet to be catalogued.1 The study has been published in Organisms Diversity & Evolution and was supported by funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.1
