The British government is encouraging low-income workers to take advantage of the Help to Save scheme during Savings Week, which runs until September 27.1 The initiative offers a substantial financial incentive: for every pound deposited, savers receive 50 pence from the government.1 With a maximum monthly contribution of £50, participants can accumulate up to £2,400 over four years while earning a maximum bonus of £1,200, with rewards paid at the end of years two and four.1
Currently, the scheme targets individuals receiving Universal Credit who are in employment.1 Since its launch in September 2018, the program has attracted 656,700 account holders who have collectively deposited £676 million, with 94 percent of participants contributing the maximum monthly amount.1 The government plans to expand eligibility to parents and caregivers by 2028.1
Despite its generous terms, uptake remains a concern. Lucy Rigby, the Treasury's economic secretary, stated: "Help to Save is an extremely beneficial scheme and we want more eligible people to make use of it."1 However, the debt charity StepChange has warned that participation levels are "still significantly below expectations," suggesting millions of eligible individuals may be missing the opportunity to build savings with government support.1
