France is spearheading an effort within the European Union to keep the United Kingdom out of the bloc's "Made in Europe" initiative, a policy designed to shield European producers of green technology and electric vehicles from unfair Chinese subsidies.1 The French position has created a divide within EU leadership, with Germany and Nordic nations advocating for the inclusion of allied countries like Britain, while Paris insists on a narrower definition covering only the 27 EU member states.1
French Industry Minister Sébastien Martin argued that "money from European taxpayers should support European workers and European factories,"1 while European Affairs Minister Benjamin Hadad stated: "If you do not belong to the internal market, if you do not contribute to the financial capacity of the internal market, you will not get the same protection."1 In contrast, German Economy Minister Karina Reichel countered that "we must reduce unilateral and critical dependencies, but we cannot isolate ourselves. This means partner countries must be included in the EU principle of origin."1 The UK has raised concerns about its potential exclusion with the European Commission.1
Ireland is hoping to reach an agreement on the industrial accelerator bill and the Made in Europe clause by December.1 The anticipated EU-UK reset summit, originally scheduled for 2026, is now expected to take place in November according to British officials.1
