The European Union is finalizing a series of bilateral free trade agreements with Southeast Asian countries, with negotiations expected to conclude with six of the eleven ASEAN members by mid-2027.1 Trade agreements with Singapore and Vietnam have already entered into force, while negotiations with Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines are on track to be completed by year-end 2026 or early 2027.1

The trade relationship between the EU and Southeast Asia has grown significantly, with bilateral merchandise trade reaching €274.9 billion (approximately $313.7 billion), representing an increase of more than 50 percent from €177.9 billion in 2016.1 Southeast Asia has become the EU's third-largest merchandise trade partner.1 The eleven ASEAN economies collectively form a €4.5 trillion trade bloc with annual growth exceeding 4.5 percent.1
