Researchers have identified two previously unknown snail species in Montenegro: Cochlostoma komarnica and Cochlostoma dobrido, each featuring shells approximately 6 millimeters in length.1 Both species possess distinctive eye positions and circular opercula—lid-like structures that close over their shells in the manner of doors.1 The discovery was made through expeditions conducted between 2018 and 2025 in the Durmitor National Park region and the Komarnica Gorge.1 The findings were published in the Biodiversity Data Journal, Volume 14, in 2026.1
The discovery carries conservation implications, particularly for Cochlostoma komarnica, which inhabits the threatened Komarnica Gorge.1 According to researchers, the gorge faces submersion from a planned hydroelectric dam and reservoir project.1 Jovana Đokić stated that such development "will destroy this wild river gorge and all of its biodiversity, including many yet-undiscovered species."1 In response to these concerns, Montenegro's ecological society has called for the Komarnica Gorge to be incorporated into UNESCO's Durmitor World Heritage designation and for the hydroelectric project to be abandoned.1
