The family of two Iranian sisters has filed a complaint with the United Nations through British human rights lawyers, seeking international intervention in their case.1 Taraneh and Romina Rahimi, both 21 years old, were sentenced to death and 25 years imprisonment respectively after participating in anti-government protests in Isfahan in January 2024.1 The twins were arrested by Islamic Revolutionary Guards eight months after attending nationwide demonstrations on January 8 and 9.1
Taraneh faces execution while Romina was sentenced to 25 years in prison, with ten other individuals also receiving death sentences alongside Taraneh for their alleged violations of Islamic law, specifically charges of waging war against God.1 According to family accounts, both sisters were subjected to torture during interrogation, including threats of rape, food deprivation, and solitary confinement; Taraneh required surgery following injuries sustained during questioning.1 The women are currently detained at Dowlatabad Prison in Isfahan.1
The appeal comes as Iran carries out record numbers of executions this year, with over 500 death sentences carried out, including at least 16 women, and more than 70 protesters in Isfahan alone facing capital punishment or death charges.1 Masoud Noorahmadi, Taraneh's 43-year-old cousin residing in Utah, stated that appealing to the UN represented an act of desperation.1 The timing of their petition coincides with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's statement this week at the United Nations General Assembly declaring Iran's readiness for dialogue and diplomacy.1
