Artificial intelligence has emerged as a dominant topic during Climate Week in New York, with major focus on its dual potential to either mitigate or worsen the global climate crisis.1 UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized this tension, stating that "Artificial intelligence could help solve all these challenges, or it could make them worse."1
The technology sector's environmental footprint has become a key concern at the gathering. Major tech companies including Microsoft, Google, and Meta have failed to meet their carbon emission reduction targets, primarily due to surging energy demands from data centers.1 UN climate chief Simon Stiell warned that "AI leaders are now on thin ice when it comes to license to operate and sinking deep underwater when it comes to public support."1 According to Evelyn Wang, MIT's vice president for energy and climate, data centers will require approximately a decade before they stop adding to global warming emissions.1
Despite these challenges, climate technology investment has shown mixed results. Global climate tech venture capital reached $26 billion in the first half of 2026, representing a 55 percent year-over-year increase, driven largely by renewable energy investments.1 However, this growth contrasts sharply with carbon management and low-carbon fuel investments, which have experienced significant declines this year.1 The world approaches a critical threshold where global warming can no longer be contained within 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.1
