A former health teacher at a university-affiliated kindergarten in Nanjing disclosed serious food safety violations at the facility following an incident that affected dozens of children.1 Wang Chang, who previously worked at the kindergarten run by Nanjing University of Information Engineering, revealed on September 14 that the kitchen had engaged in severe violations of hygiene protocols, including washing mops in cooking pots and mixing cleaning pools improperly.1
The disclosure came months after a mass illness incident on June 30, when multiple children experienced nausea and vomiting during lunch and afterward, affecting approximately 50 students across five classrooms.1 Wang Chang stated she had repeatedly discovered violations including using cooking pots to wash mops, improper use of cleaning pools, and soaking mosquito nets in bleach in vegetable washing areas.1 On September 14, she filed a formal report with the Jiangbei District Commission for Discipline Inspection and shared evidence on social media, followed by additional reports to the provincial education department and the provincial Communist Party secretary's office on September 15 and 18.1 Parents subsequently reviewed surveillance footage from June 29 that confirmed the mop-washing incident in the cooking pot.1
Regarding her decision to come forward, Wang Chang reflected: "Before deciding to expose this, I thought about it for two days and two nights," explaining that she weighed the decision carefully before ultimately choosing to report the violations to ensure children currently enrolled and those who would enroll in the future could eat clean food.1 Following a joint investigation, the kindergarten's director was dismissed from office on September 22, along with the deputy director responsible for food services; a cook directly involved in the violations was terminated from employment, and eleven other personnel faced disciplinary action.1
