Julie Kiel Holm
An international research team led by doctoral student Julie Kiel Holm of the University of Copenhagen and Sarah Pearson, associate professor at DTU Space, has discovered the first globular cluster stellar stream outside the Milky Way within the ultra-diffuse galaxy UGC9050-Dw1 1. This discovery, published in Nature, establishes a novel method for measuring the distribution of dark matter in galaxies beyond our own, providing a new tool for studying dark matter, which comprises approximately 80-85% of the universe's total matter 1.
The stellar stream represents a significant breakthrough in extragalactic astronomy. "We found a globular cluster stellar stream in another galaxy," Holm explained. "This is the first time such a stream has been observed outside our own Milky Way galaxy, which makes this discovery particularly exciting" 1. The findings were supported by funding from the Villum Foundation and the European Research Council 1.
Looking ahead, the team anticipates that future observations from the Euclid space telescope and the Nancy Grace Roman space telescope will substantially increase the number of detectable stellar streams 1.
