Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has urged the country to work toward rejoining the European Union over the next ten years, according to a paper released by his think tank.1 The Tony Blair Institute published a report titled "The Path to Rejoining a Reformed Europe," in which researchers argue that "over the next decade, Britain should work to rejoin a substantially reformed EU."1

In the paper's foreword, Blair set out his vision for how this process might unfold, stating that "Britain should, when conditions are right, signal its intention to enter into a structured formal relationship with Europe, initiating a negotiation process in which everything is negotiable, but nothing is agreed until everything is agreed."1 The proposal acknowledges that Britain would need to accept freedom of movement for people and make financial contributions as part of any rejoining arrangement.1

Blair's intervention has found support within government circles. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting recently called the Brexit vote a "catastrophic mistake" and expressed backing for the party to pursue EU membership.1 However, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy raised concerns earlier this year, warning against "reopening the circular arguments into which the country has fallen."1

A YouGov poll commissioned by the pro-EU campaign group Best for Britain, involving more than 13,000 participants and conducted in June before Keir Starmer became Prime Minister, suggested that if Labour committed to seeking EU membership, the party's projected seat count could increase from 136 to 321.1
