A large-scale study by Oxford University has revealed a significant public health crisis regarding hypertension detection and management across England. Research examining 1.4 million adults found that 59% of people with high blood pressure remain undiagnosed, while half of those receiving treatment still fail to achieve adequate blood pressure control.1 The findings underscore a decades-long stagnation in progress, with signs of deterioration emerging in the period following the COVID-19 pandemic.1
The study, drawing data from the Our Future Health initiative between 2022 and 2025, identified that more than one-third of English adults have hypertension, defined as blood pressure readings of 140/90 mmHg or higher.1 The condition affects men disproportionately, with 42% of male patients compared to 29% of female patients experiencing elevated blood pressure.1 Wenyu Liu, a researcher at Oxford University, stated that "current approaches to detecting and treating high blood pressure are not fit for purpose."1 Bryan Williams, chief medical officer of the British Heart Foundation, emphasized that "better detection and treatment could help hundreds of thousands of people avoid preventable heart disease and stroke."1
