Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian delivered a defiant address to the United Nations General Assembly in response to threats from U.S. President Donald Trump, declaring that Iran will never surrender or "bend the knee" to American pressure.235 Pezeshkian stated that "the Iranian people's will to resist will become more resolute in the face of sanctions, pressure and bullying,"3 and emphasized that Iran is prepared for dialogue and negotiation provided force is not employed as a condition.4 The speech came after Trump threatened to "annihilate" Iran or force it into a deal,23 prompting the U.S. delegation to walk out during Pezeshkian's remarks.24
Throughout his address, Pezeshkian blamed the United States and Israel for global instability and characterized the Iranian people as victims of American terrorism.15 He defended Iran's nuclear enrichment rights.2 The Iranian government presented seven preconditions for any agreement, including an end to all forms of warfare, cessation of American military aggression, lifting of naval blockades, termination of economic sanctions, and release of frozen assets.4 Iran asserted that if these conditions are met, the Strait of Hormuz could be reopened within seven days.4
Despite the hardline rhetoric, diplomatic channels remained active. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witzel for three hours—the first such meeting since June—which both sides characterized as constructive.4 Pezeshkian's speech indicated willingness to pursue resolution through negotiation rather than military confrontation. The conflict has lasted nearly seven months since late February,3 with initial progress toward a preliminary agreement in June that subsequently collapsed within weeks.3
