Sandie Peggie, an NHS Fife nurse with over 30 years of service, has brought a fresh tribunal claim against the Royal College of Nursing, alleging the union failed to support her adequately during a workplace dispute.1 Peggie previously won a partial victory in December 2025 when a tribunal judge upheld harassment allegations against her employer while dismissing claims of discrimination, indirect discrimination, and retaliation.1 She now contends that the union discriminated against her based on her "gender-critical and gender realist" beliefs.1
The dispute centers on Peggie's refusal to share changing facilities with Dr. Beth Upton, a transgender doctor.1 When Peggie raised her concerns with union representative Stuart Fraser in January 2024, he displayed what she characterizes as a "non-committal attitude" and made no mention of legal support.1 By February 2024, Peggie said she had lost confidence in the RCN, and in January 2025 the union declined to provide her with legal representation.1 The current tribunal hearing, conducted in Dundee before Judge Melanie Sangster, is expected to last seven days.1 Peggie has also filed an appeal of the original tribunal decision, which is anticipated to be heard in the first half of next year.1
