Britain will become part of OceanEye, a new global ocean monitoring system launched by the European Union, Environment Secretary Angela Eagle announced at the United Nations headquarters in New York 1. The initiative brings together the UK, EU, and Canada to enhance predictions of extreme weather and climate events through increased sharing of ocean data from institutions including the UK's Met Office 1.

The EU established OceanEye in June with funding of 92 million euros (78 million pounds sterling) 1. The project aims to create a real-time digital replica of the world's oceans by 2030 1. According to Environment Secretary Eagle, "As an island nation and global leader in climate science, we know that data from ocean monitoring is critical to our ability to protect and restore our oceans and to predict and respond to the huge threats they face" 1.

Significant gaps exist in global ocean observation capacity, particularly in polar regions, the deep ocean, and biological measurements 1. The United States currently operates more than half of the world's ocean observation platforms, with its ocean monitoring program funded at 368 million dollars (275 million pounds sterling) 1.
