Scotland recorded 1,133 drug-related deaths in 2025, representing an 11 percent increase of 116 deaths compared to 2024.1 The surge has been primarily driven by a synthetic opioid class known as nitazenes, which saw deaths more than double from 76 cases in 2024 to 247 cases in 2025.1 Opioids remain the deadliest category of drugs overall, accounting for 78 percent of all drug-related fatalities.1
The escalating toll reflects deeply entrenched disparities in Scotland's drug crisis. Male deaths increased by 19 percent year-on-year, with an average age at death of 46 years.1 The mortality burden falls disproportionately on the poorest communities, where drug-related death rates are 15 times higher than in the least deprived areas.1
In response to the crisis, the Scottish government has announced the launch of a new drug-checking service in Glasgow next month, which will expand existing programs already operating in Aberdeen and Dundee.1 A fourth service point is being prepared in Edinburgh.1 The service will allow users to submit drugs for rapid testing and receive harm reduction advice.1
