The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has documented a dramatic increase in violence against women and girls in Gaza, driven by three years of conflict that has devastated social structures and pushed families into extreme poverty.1 According to the agency's findings, cases of child marriage and forced marriage rose 123 percent in the second quarter compared to the first quarter, while reported incidents of sexual violence increased 61 percent during the same period.1 The data, collected from ten organizations and supplemented by testimony from 230 women in Gaza City and Khan Younis, reveals a crisis deepening as household survival becomes increasingly precarious.1
The deteriorating conditions have fundamentally altered family dynamics across Gaza. The proportion of female-headed households has doubled since before the war, now accounting for approximately one-quarter of all households.1 UNFPA representative Nestor Owomuhangi characterized the trends as "alarming," highlighting how desperation has created conditions for exploitation.1 Women have reported instances of extreme deprivation, including cases where young girls have been exchanged for basic commodities such as flour to sustain their families.1 The United Nations and humanitarian organizations define marriage for anyone under 18 as child marriage.1
Sexual violence survivors in Gaza are predominantly women aged 18 to 59, though the affected population also includes girls under 18, representing 8 percent of reported cases, and adult men, accounting for 5 percent.1 The UNFPA's research, conducted at the end of 2025 and beginning of 2026, underscores how prolonged conflict has eroded protections for vulnerable populations and created acute risks for women and children across the territory.1
