Australian Prime Minister Albanese and US President Trump met during the United Nations General Assembly, yet their positions on artificial intelligence governance and social media regulation remain fundamentally misaligned.1 While the meeting appeared cordial on the surface, the two leaders have taken sharply divergent stances on how to address these critical technology policy issues.
At the UN, Trump declared that "America completely rejects any globalist control schemes for artificial intelligence (referred to as 'superintelligence')," emphasizing the United States' competitive advantage in the sector.1 In contrast, Australia joined 19 other nations and the European Union in issuing a statement calling for addressing AI risks and strengthening oversight.1 This divergence extends beyond AI to social media governance, where the Trump administration has publicly criticized Australia's proposed Digital Care Bill and algorithm opt-out laws as threats to free speech and American corporate interests.12 The US embassy has warned that these reforms risk facilitating "censorship."2 Albanese has defended the social media reforms, insisting they do not constitute censorship.2
The US embassy in Australia stated that "protecting a free, open internet and online free speech is a top priority of the Trump administration," voicing concerns that the government may compel platforms to modify their algorithmic systems.1 New US Ambassador to Australia David Blatt arrived at his post the previous Friday.1
