The Trump administration has prohibited CNN, MSNBC, and Politico from accessing the White House, citing what it characterizes as intentionally negative reporting.16 The three news organizations have filed lawsuits seeking temporary restraining orders, asserting their First Amendment rights and stating: "We are filing suit today to protect our First Amendment rights and to uphold the principle that the government cannot determine which news organizations can report or what they publish."1 In response, major American television networks have agreed to suspend video coverage of Trump as a collective protest, with most refusing to fill CNN's vacant position in the White House press pool.13

The dispute has prompted significant pushback across multiple fronts. State Department Secretary Marco Rubio defended the ban by asserting that "police or soldiers are not 'kicking down the doors'" of news organizations,4 while the Justice Department argued in court filings that press access is a "privilege" rather than a right and that the banned outlets' reporting on Trump's resort projects and Iran war matters poses national security threats.689 Meanwhile, the White House has launched "Trump TV," a 24-hour YouTube channel, as an alternative to traditional press coverage.57 Two Utah Republicans have also voiced opposition to the media restrictions,2 and the White House Correspondents' Association has countered by refusing to conduct pool operations.7
