Australian Federal Police have arrested a 65-year-old retired resident of Melbourne on charges of spreading propaganda materials for the Islamic State group.1 The Somalia-born Australian citizen was taken into custody in Carlton, Melbourne, on Wednesday morning.1
The suspect is accused of pledging allegiance to IS between 2018 and 2020, and subsequently distributing approximately 10,000 files, messages, images, and audio recordings containing extreme content depicting executions and torture through encrypted platforms.1 He is also alleged to have taught others methods for planning and executing mass-scale attacks.1 Initial detection of the suspect's activities occurred in November 2020, when Australian Border Force officers searched his luggage at Melbourne Airport.1
According to Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Paula Hudson, "the material shared by this individual ranked among the top propagandists on the encrypted messaging platform he used."1 The man faces charges including membership in a terrorist organization, possession of violent extremist material, and using a communication service to cause offense.1 Australian authorities have noted that more than 200 Australians have joined Islamic State since 2012.1
