Australia's fuel prices have climbed to their highest levels in months, driven by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, Houthi control of key shipping straits, and Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure.1 Sydney's regular unleaded petrol rose by more than 20 cents over the past week to reach 237.8 Australian cents per liter, while diesel increased by 24 cents to 286.1 cents per liter.1 Brent crude oil reached 104 US dollars per barrel on Monday, approaching the peak of 114 US dollars per barrel recorded in May.1
The price pressures highlight deeper concerns about energy market instability. According to energy and climate director Alison Reeve, price volatility poses a greater economic threat than sustained high prices.1 Australia imports approximately 90 percent of its refined and crude oil globally, making it vulnerable to supply disruptions.1 The government has rejected further cuts to fuel tax—a temporary reduction between April and August cost the Treasury approximately 2.95 billion Australian dollars—and instead emphasizes reducing dependence on imported fuel as a long-term solution.1 To buffer against future supply shocks, the government plans to increase domestic fuel reserves from the standard 40 days to 50 days.1
