Scholar Zhou Bo stated that China hopes the United States will advance its position from "not supporting Taiwan independence" to "opposing Taiwan independence," though he acknowledged that achieving this shift would be difficult. 1 "If the United States could move from 'not supporting Taiwan independence' to 'opposing Taiwan independence,' that would certainly be ideal," Zhou Bo said, "but accomplishing this is likely not easy." 1
Scholar Sun Chenghuo suggested that any adjustments Trump may make to Taiwan policy would represent only minor refinements rather than a fundamental overhaul of American strategy toward the island. 1 Sun projected that U.S. arms sales to Taiwan would probably proceed in phases rather than through large-scale packages delivered all at once. 1 "Even if Trump's Taiwan policy experiences some subtle adjustments, it does not mean a dramatic transformation in America's overall Taiwan policy," Sun stated, adding that "the United States' comprehensive approach to Taiwan has not undergone fundamental change." 1
