Research into the psychological roots of obsessive-compulsive disorder has identified early trauma and experiences of rejection as potential factors contributing to the development of the condition in some individuals.1 A qualitative study involving interviews with 16 Australian adults diagnosed with OCD—predominantly women experiencing symptoms ranging from moderate to severe—found that most had endured childhood trauma, including sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, harassment, bullying, or neglect.1
The research, grounded in the theory of the "feared self," suggests that intrusive thoughts experienced by people with OCD may stem from a deep-seated fear of becoming a bad person, a fear often rooted in these adverse early experiences.1 Beyond trauma, a second major theme emerged: feelings of rejection, manifested through failure to meet parental expectations and emotional coldness from parents.1 The findings are particularly significant given that OCD affects approximately one in fifty people, yet up to half of those receiving optimal psychological treatment do not experience substantial improvement.1 Researchers propose using imagery rescripting techniques as a therapeutic approach to challenge the "feared self" belief system underlying the disorder.1
