Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool has opened the UK's first dedicated clinic to treat young people suffering severe bladder complications caused by prolonged ketamine use.1 An analysis of the clinic's first 60 patients revealed cases involving children as young as 13 years old, with a mean age of 14.1 Approximately two-thirds of the patients were girls, and roughly two-thirds lived in the most deprived areas.1
The condition produces debilitating symptoms including frequent urination, incontinence, and blood in the urine, with some patients resorting to incontinence pads and bedside buckets for toileting.1 Among the 60 patients studied, 16 had diagnoses of autism or ADHD, one-fifth had experienced foster care, and 72 percent had endured emotional trauma during childhood.1 Medical expert Harriet Corbett warned that ketamine-induced damage "can be devastating," potentially causing bladder ulceration, fibrosis, and irreversible consequences.1 In severe cases, the condition may require surgical intervention or dialysis treatment.1 The findings were published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood medical journal.1
