Fariba Hashimi, a 23-year-old Afghan cyclist, won the silver medal in the women's road cycling race at the Asian Games held in Nagoya, Japan on Tuesday, August 27.1 To train safely under Taliban rule, Hashimi disguised herself as a man, stating: "I always wore men's clothes to train, wearing two or three different masks so people wouldn't recognize me or attack me."1
Having fled to Italy, where she receives support from former world champion Alexandra Cappellotto, Hashimi has already competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics alongside her sister Yulduz and plans to participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.1 She finished seventh in the women's individual time trial.1 Through her achievements, Hashimi hopes to inspire Afghan women to pursue their dreams.1
