Nine leading European pharmaceutical companies have written to European leaders, including Andy Burnham, to sound an alarm about the continent's fading position in drug development and investment.1 The executives behind companies including AstraZeneca, GSK, Novo Nordisk, Boehringer Ingelheim, Chiesi, Sanofi, Ipsen, Novartis, and Roche argue that Europe is losing critical ground to competitors in the United States and China, citing a dramatic shift in global research capacity and regulatory speed.1
The companies point to striking disparities in investment and market dynamics over recent years. The United States and China have announced more than 600 billion dollars in pharmaceutical investments over the past two years, while Europe's share of global drug research and development has declined from 43 percent in 1990 to 31 percent today.1 The share of clinical trials conducted in Europe has fallen from 18 percent a decade ago to 9 percent currently, while China's proportion has surged from below 10 percent to nearly 30 percent.1 Additionally, 49 percent of newly approved therapies failed to reach European patients in the last year, an increase from 46 percent in 2019.1 Drug approval timelines across Europe remain inconsistent, ranging from 56 days in Germany to 1,201 days in Romania, with an average of 600 days.1
The pharmaceutical executives are calling on European governments to treat medicines as strategic infrastructure as part of a broader effort to restore competitiveness. Bridging the clinical trial gap alone could generate 53 billion euros in value and create 82,000 jobs for Europe, according to the companies' assessment.1 Europe maintains a pharmaceutical trade surplus exceeding 220 billion euros.1
