Piers Morgan announced plans to sue Earl Spencer and his publisher Penguin Random House over what he claims are fabricated accusations in Spencer's memoir "The Swan Song: Diana, My Sister."1 The dispute centers on Spencer's assertion that Morgan published private photographs of Princess Diana taken at a gym, an allegation Morgan has directly refuted with documentary evidence.12
Morgan demonstrated that the photographs in question were published on November 7, 1993, in the Sunday Mirror.12 At that time, Morgan was working as an entertainment columnist at The Sun, a rival publication to the Daily Mirror.2 Morgan did not join the Daily Mirror as editor until October 1995, remaining in that position until 2004.12 "If the Earl is so incredibly wrong on the basic facts about me, why should we believe anything else in this book?" Morgan stated regarding the discrepancy.1
Spencer subsequently acknowledged the error, apologizing to Morgan for what he described as an "incorrect assumption."2 Spencer remarked: "As a historian, accuracy matters to me. I apologize to Mr. Morgan for this mistake."2
