A comprehensive study examining nearly 47.4 million MOT test records has found that high-mileage electric vehicles outperform comparable petrol cars in reliability.1 Among cars that have traveled between 90,000 and 120,000 miles, electric vehicles failed their MOT tests at a rate of 16.5 percent compared to 22.1 percent for petrol vehicles—demonstrating roughly 25 percent greater reliability for the electric models.1 The disparity widens further at higher mileages, with electric vehicles showing a 16 percent failure rate beyond 120,000 miles against 23.5 percent for petrol counterparts.1
The research was conducted by New Automotive Consulting on behalf of the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), with the explicit goal of boosting consumer confidence in the second-hand electric vehicle market.1 Toby Poston, chief executive of the BVRLA, stated that "a well-maintained, higher-mileage electric car can be an extremely durable used vehicle."1 However, the study has notable limitations: electric vehicles showed tire defect rates approximately double those of petrol cars, and the analysis did not assess battery health, degradation, or charging performance.1
