Decades after major nations disposed of radioactive waste in the Atlantic Ocean, the submerged containers are now showing visible signs of deterioration. Between 1946 and 1970, the United States dumped approximately 47,800 radioactive waste containers west of San Francisco, with many failing to reach their intended destination and instead scattering across roughly 1,400 square kilometers of seafloor.1 From 1946 to 1993, European nations including Britain, France, and Switzerland discharged approximately 200,000 barrels of radioactive waste into the northeastern Atlantic.1 Ocean dumping of radioactive materials was prohibited in 1993, and investigations into the contamination have only recently begun.1
The visible leakage from these aging containers represents a long-delayed reckoning with Cold War-era disposal practices. The vast quantity of waste distributed across the Atlantic seabed underscores the scale of environmental contamination from decades of oceanic dumping.
