The country's strategic situation has been underscored by recent incidents in its airspace. NATO fighter jets shot down a drone that had intruded into Lithuanian airspace a week ago, with the unmanned aircraft originating from the direction of Belarus, a key Russian ally.1 "We will fight back... we will engage," Sinkevičius stated, emphasizing Lithuania's commitment to defending its territory.1 British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting commended the response, noting that "thanks to the swift and professional actions of Lithuanian and Italian forces, NATO once again demonstrated our readiness to protect our airspace."1
Lithuania, which joined NATO in 2004 alongside Estonia and Latvia, falls under the protection of Article 5 of the NATO Treaty.1
