Colombian authorities have declared a state of public calamity following a major wildfire threatening the popular tourist town of Villa de Leyva, located approximately 160 kilometers from the capital Bogotá.1 The fire, which began on Saturday, had consumed roughly 290 hectares (717 acres) of vegetation by Sunday evening, with approximately 50 percent of the blaze brought under control.1 Over 400 firefighters, emergency workers, residents, and volunteers have been mobilized to combat the flames, with helicopters conducting approximately 170 aerial water-dropping missions that released 240,000 liters (63,400 gallons) of water.1
Colombia is currently monitoring 27 forest fires across the country, of which 19 remain active while 8 are contained.1 Between June 16 and August 6, 2024, Colombia recorded 438 forest fires that burned approximately 7,153 hectares of vegetation.1 Environmental Minister Fabio Arjona indicated that preliminary information suggests the fire may have been deliberately set.1 Neighboring Ecuador is also battling wildfires, with 12 active blazes currently burning more than 21,800 hectares of vegetation so far this year.1
