Three salmon farming companies in Tasmania have used more than 150,000 underwater explosive devices to deter seals from their operations since 2016.1 In the first half of 2026 alone, approximately 1,800 such devices were deployed across the farms, with Huon Aquaculture accounting for the largest share at around 1,126 units—roughly 64 percent of the total.1 The practice has coincided with significant seal mortality, with 48 seals recorded dead at Tasmanian farming sites since 2021, including four deaths in the first half of 2026.1
Despite ongoing use of explosives, the frequency of detonations has declined substantially since April 2021.1 Tassal, one of the three operators, deployed 551 explosive devices in the first half of 2026, double the amount used in equivalent periods over the previous two years, yet the company remains the only farm operator to have employed bean bag rounds as an alternative deterrent, firing 31 such projectiles.1 Seal intrusions into Tassal's farming cages totaled 1,100 incidents over the past three years, though this figure decreased 26 percent in 2025 compared to the prior year.1
