The Bristol Diocese is exploring plans to repurpose the shuttered All Saints Church, which houses the remains of 17th-century slave trader Edward Colston, into a community space that reflects on the city's historical ties to the slave trade.1 According to church officials, Colston's bones are expected to stay in place, as Christian burial traditions discourage disturbing interred remains except in exceptional circumstances requiring fundamental structural renovation of the building.1
The church has remained closed since 1984, and Colston died in 1721.1 Church Warden Mandy Ford explained that established guidelines operate on a clear presumption: "you will not disturb the remains of someone who has received a Christian burial unless there are particular circumstances, so the presumption is they will stay where they are."1 The Diocese's approach follows a broader reckoning with Colston's legacy in Bristol—his statue was toppled and thrown into the harbor during 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, and that same year the city's concert hall was renamed from Colston Hall to Bristol Beacon.1 Additionally, two Bristol churches have removed memorial windows dedicated to Colston.1
